Application Guide for 2020 Sun Yat-sen University “Confucius China Studies Program (CCSP) ” Ph.D. Fellowships

    In accordance with the enrollment information of 2020-2021 Confucius China Studies Program Ph.D. Fellowships published by the Confucius Institute Headquarters as well as the actual conditions of SYSU, this guide is formulated as follows.

    Ⅰ. Introduction
    The Confucius China Studies Program, set up by the Confucius Institute Headquarters, mainly subsidizes outstanding international young talents through research projects and other channels, so as to help them better understand China and Chinese culture, enrich Sinology studies, promote the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes and enhance the friendships between people in China and the rest of the world. SYSU is one of the 16 key Chinese universities designated by the Confucius Institute Headquarters to recruit international students to study in this program.
    There are six sub-programs under the Confucius China Studies Program, of which the Ph.D. Fellowships in China program funds foreign students to study for Ph.D. in China, with four years of full-time study period and Chinese as the language of instruction. The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship program subsidizes doctoral students registered in foreign universities to study, conduct research, and write doctoral dissertations in China, which lasts from six months to two years.
    The Confucius China Studies Program supports international students to study subjects in humanities and social sciences and covers their project research and other expenses. Please refer to the attachment for supervisors information.
    Ⅱ. Eligibility
    1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens, under (or at) the age of 40 and in good health.
    2. Language Proficiency
    (1) Applicants for the Ph.D. Fellowship program in China should hold an HSK (level V) certificate (with 210 points or above). Priority is given to applicants with a higher level of proficiency in Chinese under same conditions.
    (2) Applicants for the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship program should have an HSK (Level Ⅲ) certificate with 180 points or above. Priority is given to applicants with a higher level of proficiency in Chinese under same conditions.
    (3) Applicants who have been awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship are not allowed to apply for this program.
    Ⅲ. Scholarship Coverage (final results released by the Confucius Institute Headquarters shall prevail) 
    1. Living allowance and accommodation fee 
    2. Research fund
    3. Round-trip international airfare (economy class)
    4. Tuition fee and other support provided by SYSU
    5. Medical and accident insurance premium in China
    6. Group activities and cultural experience
    7. Expenses for foreign supervisors’ visits or research in China (for the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship program).
    Ⅳ. Application Procedures
    1. Online application in the Confucius Institution Scholarship Application System. Applicants should log onto http://ccsp.chinese.cn to register a personal account, fill in the application online, upload relevant certification materials and submit the application form before printing.
    2.  Online application in the SYSU ystem. Applicants are required to visit SYSU Office of International Students’ Affairs (http://iso.sysu.edu.cn) for online application. Please choose “APPLY ONLINE” accordingly, fill in relevant information correctly and completely, and upload the application materials (see Application Materials). Application materials should be the original copies in either Chinese/English. If the original copy of the following materials is written in non-Chinese/English, a notarized copy in Chinese/English is required.
    3. Mailing application materials. Applicants should mail their signed application form and other application materials (see Application Materials) respectively to the Confucius Institute Headquarters and SYSU (see Contact Information for postal addresses). Applicants should also scan paper materials into PDF files in strictly accordance with the order of application materials and send them to the email of SYSU (yangfengk@mail.sysu.edu.cn).
    4. Scholarship review. SYSU will review the applicant’s enrollment qualification. Those who pass SYSU’s review will be reviewed and face-to-face interviewed by a panel of experts from the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Admission Notices will be mailed to the recipients by SYSU.
    V. Application Materials
    1. Applicants for the Ph.D. Fellowship in China program should provide the notarized academic transcripts and degree certificates of bachelor’s and master’s studies, and their notarized Chinese translation respectively. Applicants for the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship program should provide the notarized Chinese/English translation of the pre-graduation certificate.
    2. Two recommendation letters from experts in the related fields.
    3. Transcripts of HSK test.
    4. Mater’s thesis abstract and other research publications.
    5. A research proposal for doctoral thesis. (Applicants for the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship program should provide a plan for studying in China.)
    6. Photocopy of valid visa.

    8. Application Form for Foreign Students of Sun Yat-sen University.
    9. Priority is given to applicants who can provide a recommandation letter from Confucius Institutes.
    10. Applicants should also provide additional materials required by SYSU accordingly.
    Ⅵ. Application Deadline
    November 2019 to March 20th, 2020 23:59 (Beijing Time)
     Ⅶ. Other Information
    1. Admitted students must complete the registration procedures according to the registration date and location required in the Admission Notice. Those who fail to register on time and to pass the physical examination for enrollment will be deprived of their scholarship.
    2. Admitted students are required to participate in the annual scholarship review according to regulations. Those who fail to pass the annual review will be suspended or disqualified from the scholarship.
